With over 35 years of service in the Department of Defense, Darren joined Federal Service in 2004 after retiring from 20 years active duty as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army. He joined Washington Headquarters Services (WHS) in 2008 as the Assistant Director for Programs in the Executive Services Directorate (ESD) with oversight of DoD FOIA Policy, OSD/Joint Staff FOIA, Directives, Security Review, DoD Regulatory Policy and OSD Records Management. Prior to this assignment, he served for four years as Director of the Emergency Communications Center for the Pentagon Force Protection Agency where he oversaw the 24/7 operations of the Agency. He has nearly 25 years of experience in the Pentagon.
Born in Virginia, he grew up in Lynchburg and Richmond. His academic degrees are a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Safety from Virginia Commonwealth University (1984) and a Masters in Military Arts and Sciences from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas (1997). He is married to the former Susan Templeton of Lenoir, NC. They have been married for 35 years and have four children and five grandchildren so far. Darren and Susan reside in Springfield, Virginia.
