D.C. Feds Hunker Down for Another Blizzard

Feds in the Washington, D.C., area will have their eyes on the skies as yet another big winter storm threatens the capital region. According to a winter storm warning the National Weather Service posted on Feb. 4, Washington-area feds can expect to see anywhere from 16 to 24 inches of snow falling between 6 a.m. EST Friday and 10 p.m. EST Saturday. Gates to Ask NATO for More Trainers, Mentors

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates left the Washington, D.C., Beltway Wednesday, putting the politics of war spending behind him, only to land squarely in the middle of the same debate among the NATO partners here. Gates flew overnight to spend Thursday and Friday working with U.S. allies to help in prioritizing the organization’s spending and at the same time hoping to garner a larger commitment of troops and resources for the war in Afghanistan. After extended delay, Senate confirms GSA chief

The Senate overwhelmingly approved the nomination of Martha Johnson to lead the General Services Administration on Thursday, giving the agency its first permanent leader since the resignation of Lurita Doan in 2008. President Obama first tapped Johnson, who served as GSA's chief of staff from 1996 through 2001, to lead the agency in April. Read more

McChrystal says he sees progress in Afghanistan

The top U.S. military commander in Afghanistan said Thursday the security conditions there are no longer “deteriorating,” in contrast to assessments from other nations that the Taliban is expanding in the region and the situation has turned explosive. Gen. Stanley McChrystal acknowledged the Taliban has made strides and said he is “not prepared to say we’ve turned a corner.” Read more
