Making a Difference
The Navy Annex facility, located in Arlington, VA, has served a worthy purpose as the Headquarters of the Marine Corps and a workplace for many Department of Defense (DoD) personnel throughout its 70-year history. The land on which the building sits is now slated for another honorable purpose in support of Arlington National Cemetery. WHS is leading the effort to prepare and transfer over 42 acres of land to the Secretary of the Army.
On August 27, 2012, the contract for the demolition of the Navy Annex was awarded to Corinthian Contractors, Inc. and DSI, a Joint Venture. The demolition team, overseen by WHS facilities and acquisition experts, is ahead of schedule in the demolition project and is applying environmentally sustainable practices to recycle and re-purpose much of the building materials. The team is also using proven practices to bring down each of the Navy Annex’s seven wings and headhouse in a manner that is minimally invasive to nearby neighborhoods.
WHS engaged the local community and DoD, local, and state government partners early on in this effort to effectively communicate the plans, schedule, and any impacts up front. WHS leaders, along with members of the Joint Venture team and Arlington County representatives, held a Community Meeting with residents of the nearby communities in November 2012 to provide details and answer questions about the project.
Demolition and land preparation activities are expected to be complete by September 2013. WHS is committed to regularly communicating with the community and partners throughout the duration of the effort.
