SUSTAINABLE DESIGN & CONSTRUCTABILITY

Mission Statement:

The Integrated Sustainable Design and Constructability Team will be an ongoing source of information, guidance and direction for the reasonable integration of sustainable design and construction for all Pentagon Renovation & Construction Program Office projects.

What is Sustainable Design:

Sustainable design includes not only environmental considerations, but how environment integrates with cost, schedule, operations, maintenance, and worker/employee considerations.

How is Constructablity Integrated:

The Constructability Program improves the process by which constructablity is addressed in design. Constructability reviews are typically undertaken on a facility design to improve construction ease. This program provides new and more effective methods to introduce and address constructability in design.

Constructability deals with the practical implementation of sustainable design to balance constructability with sustainability.

How Sustainable Design is integrated into the
Pentagon Renovation projects:

The Integrated Sustainable Design and Constructability Team incorporates a new "Sustainable Design & Constructability" methodology into the construction process.

LEED - Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design:

Design and construction practices:

Sustainable Site Planning:

Minimizing the impact of the construction project on the surrounding natural environment through limiting disturbance of soils, vegetation, and wildlife throughout construction and operations and maintenance of the facility.

Water Efficiency
Energy Performance & Atmospheric Disturbance:

Maximizing use of renewable energy sources and minimizing fossil fuel use.

Conservation of Materials & Resources:

Using natural resources efficiently through maximizing reuse/recycling of material resources an accurately predicting quantities of raw materials needed - to include water, wood, etc.

Indoor Environmental Quality:

Enhancing the indoor working environment for all who occupy thefacilitythrough promoting worker health and safety with design and construction innovations.

Management of Life Cycle Cost:

To manage the project using long-term operations and maintenance considerations to increase cost effectiveness and maintain long-term value of the facility.

Certification:

The U.S. Green Building Council has developed the most comprehensive voluntary system for designing, constructing and operating green buildings called, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). LEED is currently the only industry standard available to score construction projects on sustainable characteristics. The rating system provides guidelines and standards for building & managing resource (and energy) efficient buildings.
